Prof Enrico Coiera

Professor of Medical Informatics - Director, Australian Alliance for AI in Healthcare

Professional Bio

Professor Enrico Coiera is the Director of the Centre for Health Informatics at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation and Foundation Professor in Medical Informatics, Macquarie University. 

Trained in medicine with a computer science PhD in Artificial Intelligence (AI), he has a research background in industry and academia, with a strong international research reputation for his work. He spent 10 years at the prestigious Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories in Bristol UK where he led numerous health technology projects and has overseen the development and trial of multiple e-Health interventions. 

Professor Coiera leads the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digital Health, was a Lead Investigator on the NHMRC Partnership Centre in Health System Sustainability and holds a NHMRC Leadership Investigator grant. Professor Coiera founded and leads the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AAAiH). 

He was awarded the François Grémy award by the International Medical Informatics Association, his field’s highest recognition in 2015, and was named the Australian Field Leader in medical Informatics in 2021. 

In 2017, Coiera was one of ~100 scientists worldwide elected as a Foundation Member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, the peak international Academy for the discipline. Coiera was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2018, and a Member of the International Academy of Quality and Safety in Healthcare in 2020. 

His textbook Guide to Health Informatics is in its 3rd edition, is widely used internationally, and is translated into several languages. He has >350 publications, >22,000 citations in Google Scholar with an H-index of 75.
